<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>Despite the fact that China has historically symbolized an “Oriental” pattern of power-property relations, with everything in the country belonging to a sovereign ruler, this has been changing over the last 35 years. Steadily and voluntarily the state is ceding control of property to different social groups. This process entails several problems: legal vacuum engenders rent-oriented behavior of bureaucracy, reforms often turn out to be half-way and cannot solve a problem. Nevertheless, the process seems to be irreversible and likely to foster political and social changes in China in the near future.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>Китай</kwd><kwd>бюрократия</kwd><kwd>политическая система</kwd><kwd>модернизация</kwd><kwd>власть и собственность</kwd><kwd>модели развития</kwd><kwd>экономика</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>China</kwd><kwd>bureaucracy</kwd><kwd>political system</kwd><kwd>modernization</kwd><kwd>power and property</kwd><kwd>development patterns</kwd><kwd>economy</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Tilt, B (2008), ‘Smallholders and the ‘Household Responsibility System’: Adapting to Institutional Change in Chinese Agriculture’, Human Ecology, April, vol. 36, issue 2.</mixed-citation><mixed-citation xml:lang="en">Tilt, B (2008), ‘Smallholders and the ‘Household Responsibility System’: Adapting to Institutional Change in Chinese Agriculture’, Human Ecology, April, vol. 36, issue 2.</mixed-citation></citation-alternatives></ref><ref id="cit2"><label>2</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Montinola, G., Qian, Y., Weingast, B.R.
