<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>Ethnic confl icts are a challenge to the state as it impacts the foreign policy as well as the domestic politics of a nation. The region of North Caucasus has been the most unstable region among the Republics of the Russian Federation. The present article will analyse the causes of the rising tensions among the ethnic groups and the role of Russia in solving the problems in the region. It will further explain the drawbacks of the Russian authorities and will recommend policies which could bring a positive change in the confl ict. The use of force would not be able to bring any change in the region rather it would be more fruitful if efforts are made to address the causes for the ethnic violence.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>Северный Кавказ</kwd><kwd>этнос</kwd><kwd>Россия</kwd><kwd>безопасность</kwd><kwd>ислам</kwd><kwd>Чечня</kwd><kwd>конфликт</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>North Caucasus</kwd><kwd>ethnicity</kwd><kwd>Russia</kwd><kwd>security</kwd><kwd>Islam</kwd><kwd>Chechnya</kwd><kwd>confl ict</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Akiner, Shirin.
